The composer uses two distinct textures in this work, the highly soloistic and somewhat expressive, versus the rhythmical, punctuated repeated note texture. The work opens with a bassoon solo, which states the theme. The oboe solo in the “Variante” movement introduces the rhythmical texture. From this point the melody line and rhythm play different roles. In the movement “Contrappunto”, the contrapuntal line is juxtaposed with the rhythmical material derived from “Variante” movement. In that same movement the composer gives a clarinet the chance to shine, including a lengthy cadenza.
There is no great technical difficulty in this work. There are great rhythmical difficulties where the individual subdivision is the key. In some aspects the rhythmical difficulties of this piece resemble the ones in the fourth movement of the Alexander Tansman’s “Trio” where the rhythmical material is split between two instruments.

Zbigniew Bagiński
Born January 19, 1949 in Szczecin.
He studied composition with Tadeusz Paciorkiewicz at the PWSM in Warsaw and graduated with honors in 1972. He is a composer and a teacher and his teaching engagements started at the KUL back in 1974.
In 1968 he was awarded 1st prize for Tryptyk (Triptych) in a competition in Kołobrzeg, and in 1971 a 2nd prize at the Konkurs im. J. Elsnera (Elsner Competition). In 1973 he was awarded an honorable mention in the XVIII Konkurs Młodych Kompozytowrów ZKP (18th Youth Competition of the Polish Composer’s Union) in Warsaw. In 1989 he won a 2nd prize in the Konkurs Oddziału Warszawskiego ZKP (The ZKP Warsaw Competition).
The same year, he began teaching composition at the Akademia Muzyczna Fryderyka Chopina in Warsaw (Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw). He has been an associate professor since 1991 and a full time professor since 2001. In 1992 he won 2nd prize in Kiev Composition Competition and in 1994 a 4th prize in Tel-Aviv, followed by few more wins concluded with 1st prize at the 50th Anniversary Composition Competition of ZKP in Warsaw.
In 2004 he became a Composition Department Chair at The Fryderyk Chopin University of Music. He is also a lecturer at the Akademia Teatralna im. Aleksandra Zelwerowicza (Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theater Academy) in Warsaw. His compositions have been performed around the world. Bagiński composed around 60 works and the output includes orchestra works, vocal and instrumental, chamber music, solo and staged forms.
