Partita

Gołąbek, Jakub (1739-1789)
Partita (5:50) Publisher: PWM (c1961)

Adagio-Allegro
Andante moderato
Allegro molto

Instrumentation: 2 clarinets, 2 horns, bassoon

This is a very pleasant classical-style composition. The Partita seems to be more of a solo piece for the first clarinet (partly doubled by the second clarinet) with an accompaniment from the horns and the bassoon. This treatment of the instrumentation is true throughout all the movements of the composition. In the 2nd movement the bassoon has more of a basso continuo part, while the horns play mostly quarter notes that help to build the harmonic texture.

The manuscript of this “Partita” can be found in the Library of the Theological Seminary at Sandomierz. The Partita is titled “Partita in C” and the manuscript is written for 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and bassoon. The second clarinet part is missing, and has been re-composed by Karol Mrowiec. The parts, in the modern publication, have been edited for the contemporary performer by Tadeusz Ochlewski.
